On Sunday morning, The Today Show hosted our “Reel Girls, Real Life” contest winner, Kylee Darcy and Dr. Kimberly Williams, a Clinical Neuropsychologist, to talk about underage drinking and the creation of the public service announcement “What You Don’t Know” on Check out the segment here.

Pretty cool, huh? What do you think? Let us know by commenting below!

It’s been a year in the making and the finished product is finally here! Thanks to your votes, Kylee Darcy won Girl Talk’s “Reel Girls, Reel Life” PSA contest, and got to film the commercial with the pros. “What You Don’t Know” is now playing live nationwide!

We all know that underage drinking is not only illegal but can also lead to serious consequences such as car crashes, health problems, and even death. These are, of course, serious issues that need serious attention. However, the social consequences of underage drinking are often overlooked. What’s more is that the vast majority of teens believe that girls have even more to lose than boys when under the influence of alcohol. “What You Don’t Know” emphasizes both of these issues.

Two thirds of American teens admit that they – or someone they know – have made regrettable decisions linked to drinking. We’ve all heard stories about teens doing embarrassing things while under the influence of alcohol. No one wants to get into fights with a friend for no reason, tell a crush about embarrassing secrets, trip and fall or get sick in front of everyone, or forget your curfew. Underage drinking can only lead to trouble – not to mention, it’s illegal! When you drink underage you put yourself and your friends at risk for doing all of these stupid things and countless others. Reputations, relationships, and dignity are often compromised or even ruined. Drinking underage is just not worth it!

“Of course underage drinking is illegal and can lead to tragedies like car crashes and deaths, but the negative social consequences are much more prevalent,” says Kylee. “I hope my commercial will make teen girls think twice about all of the dangers of underage drinking.”

We hope so too, Kylee!

Hey Everybody,

I just received a wonderful thank you note from one of our Girl Talk: Reel Girls, Reel Life finalists, Kerri Kehl. I was really moved by this letter and would like to share it with you. Kerri is truly an amazing girl. She works hard to be a positive role model to younger girls by encouraging them to make the right decisions about alcohol and lead a healthy lifestyle. Her commercial idea entry entitled “Hard Year” for the Reel Girls, Reel Life contest is just one example of a healthy and positive message that she has modeled. I’m not the only one who notices her talent, though – she was interviewed and written up in her local Arizona news for her awesome work! (Click here to check out just some of the coverage she got). Way to go, Kerri!

Check out her note:

Hey Katie and all of the Girl Talk and Century Council members,
This is Kerri Kehl, one of the Girl Talk Real Girls, Real Life contest finalists. I wanted to thank all of you so much for this wonderful experience. I was babysitting when my mom called me and told me that I was a semi-finalist in the contest. I was so excited! And then I found out I was a finalist when I was on a trip in Michigan. While we were there a local Tucson newspaper and various news stations were calling for interviews! It made me feel very important. I love to act and I am trying to start modeling, and I want to be a good role model for younger girls, so that was a great opportunity. And then a couple days ago I got an awesome package from Girl Talk with a check for $500! Thanks so much! I gave $100 to each of the girls that helped produce my commercial (they say thank you too). Overall, I just want to say thank you, thank you, thank you. :) The contest was a blast!
Thanks Girl Talk!
Kerri Kehl, age 15 Tucson, AZ

Kerri, the thanks should really be aimed towards you! Thank YOU for being a voice to help fight underage drinking and promote a healthy lifestyle among young women like yourself. Your hard work and dedication makes a real difference. You’re a true superstar – keep it up!

Hey Everyone,

The time has come!! We are so excited to announce that the grand prize winning commercial for Girl Talk’s national Reel Girls, Real Life contest is Kylee Darcy’s “What You Don’t Know!” Kylee’s concept, which aims to highlight the dangerous consequences that her peers might not know about alcohol, was chosen by an esteemed panel judges as well as the “Public’s Vote” winner by more than 20,000 online voters at

The Reel Girls, Real Life contest serves to give young women like you a voice to help fight underage drinking and promote a healthy lifestyle. Kylee Darcy’s winning concept will be produced and distributed as The Century Council’s national commercial which will be released as a public service announcement for prom and graduation season in April 2008. She will receive $5,000 and we will fly her and a parent or guardian to film the commercial with the pros!

Kylee’s efforts to fight underage drinking among teen girls nationwide come at an especially important time as the holiday season is the full swing. The Winter Holidays are a time of great celebration and traditions but it can also be one of the most dangerous times. Sadly, drunk driving and underage drinking are sometimes part of the holiday celebration.

With the fun and excitement associated with the holidays, it is especially important to make the right choice about alcohol. If you are under the age of 21, the only responsible decision is not to drink. Making smart decisions and choosing a healthy lifestyle will ensure that the holidays remain a joyful time.
